Durable goods headline number falls less than expected in September

  • September Durable Goods: -0.4% vs. -0.9% expected and +1.3% prior (revised from +1.8%).
  • Follows four straight months of increases.
  • Excluding transportation, new orders: +0.4% vs. +0.5% expected and +0.2% prior.
  • Excluding defense, new orders fell 2.0%, with transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, driving the decline; down $1.8B or 2.3% to $77.7B.
  • Core Durable Goods: +0.4% vs. +0.4% expected and +0.3% prior.
  • Shipments of manufactured durable goods, up four of the last five months, increased 0.4% to $257.0B in September. Machinery, up 11 of the last 12 months, led the rise, up 1.7%.
  • Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods rise for eight straight months, up 0.7% in September after a 0.9% increase in August. Transportation equipment, up seven of the past eight months, rose 0.6%.
  • Inventories of manufactured durable rose 0.9%, up for eight consecutive months, in September. Transportation equipment, also up for eight straight months, increased 0.7%.
  • Nondefense new orders for capital goods fell 4.2% in September to $84.9B; shipments increased 1.9% to $81.0B; unfilled orders rose 0.5% to $757.4B.
  • Defense new orders for capital goods jumped 28% in September to $15.0B, while shipments fell 0.9% to $12.2B.
