The Business News Week Ahead

A light week on the global calendar will be concentrated in industrial production and consumer prices, two areas where upward paths may be emerging. German industrial production for December will be posted on Monday amid expectations for an eighth straight monthly gain. This will be followed by December data from Italy, also on Monday, then France on Wednesday and the UK on Friday with monthly production from all three, after declines in November, expected to bounce into positive ground. January consumer prices will open Wednesday with China, which saw a jump in December on a rebound for pork, followed later that day by the US where, despite an overall December jump, core prices have been soft and are expected to stay that way; on Friday price data will be posted from both Switzerland, where deflation has been persistent, and India where inflation has by contrast been hot. Other data to watch include Swiss unemployment on Monday, US jobless claims on Thursday, and UK GDP and US consumer sentiment on Friday.
