Consumer Comfort Index Drops Sharply
Because weekly indicators are subject to volatility, trends are always
important to consider. The consumer comfort index fell a very sharp 1.9
points in the August 28 week to 43.4, but the prior week's 45.3, which
is the strongest reading of the year, looks like an odd outlier.
Splitting the difference puts the index in the low 44 area which is
respectable and roughly where the index has been trending all year. Most
readings on consumer spirits, including this index, are solid and
ultimately reflect the strength of the labor market.
