Motor Vehicle Sales Better-Than-Expected

Unit sales improved to a better-than-expected 17.2 million annual rate in September from 17.0 million in August to offer a signal of monthly strength for dollar sales of motor vehicles, which make up about 1/5 of total retail sales. Yet apart from the comparison with August, September's unit-sales pace is moderate compared to a 17.1 million monthly average over the past year.
